Jude Bellingham: childhood and life before football

Jude Bellingham was born in the town of Stourbridge on June 29, 2003. He is the first of two children born to Mark Bellingham and Denise Bellingham.

According to reports from his parents, Jude Bellingham was an obedient and promising child. At this time, his father was already influencing him with stories about football and the world of sport.

His father’s passion and natural love for football motivated the young Englishman to try and pursue football as a professional career.

Jude Bellingham attended Priory School, located in Edgbaston, where he developed some of his skills during football training.

Jude Bellingham joined Birmingham’s youth squad

Noticing their son’s love for football, his parents, especially his father, enrolled him in the Birmingham City under-8 team, a team that currently competes in the Premier League.

It is worth noting that before that, Bellingham had a brief spell at Stourbridge FC, a local team in England.

After joining Birmingham’s under-8s team, the midfielder’s natural talent earned him quick promotions through the club’s ranks as he grew.

At the age of 14, Bellingham was already playing for Birmingham City’s under-18 team and, at 15, he was promoted to the youth under-23 team.

Natural talent and the award from FourFourTwo magazine

It was in October 2018 that Jude Bellingham debuted for Birmingham City’s under-23s in a game against Nottingham Forest under-23s.

Bellingham made an excellent first impression in his first game for the team and gave his team victory when he scored the only goal of the match in the 87th minute.

His positive performance at under-23 level earned him a place on FourFourTwo magazine’s “50 Most Exciting Teenagers in English Football” list.

It was after that that he began to appear on the radars of the main European clubs.

However, what pleased him most was being allowed to train with the Birmingham City first team and travel with the team to games.

Jude Bellingham’s first professional contract (2019)

In July 2019, Jude Bellingham won the privilege of training with the main team in pre-season, in Portugal.

Bellingham demonstrated that he wasn’t just anyone by scoring in preseason games. With this, he received the number 22 shirt and was part of the squad for the 2019/20 season.

Bellingham’s first season was a success

Upon his debut, aged just 16 years and 38 days, the local newspaper, Birmingham Mail, named Bellingham man of the match. The match ended in a 3-0 victory in favor of Birmingham City.

19 days after his professional debut, Bellingham played his first League Cup game. However, the result was a 3-0 defeat.

Aged just 16 years and 63 days, Bellingham scored the first professional goal of his career thanks to a deflection in a 1-0 win over Stoke City.

Over the following months, Bellingham moved from the left wing to the central midfield position, taking on playmaking duties.

In November 2019, Jude Bellingham’s performance caught the attention of EFL officials, who named him EFL Young Player of the Month.

Interest from other clubs and negotiations with Manchester United

In January 2020, interest in the player from major English and European clubs skyrocketed, and the young star was linked to several teams.

On the final day of the January transfer window, it was revealed that Birmingham City had turned down a £20 million offer from Manchester United.

Bellingham continued to play for Birmingham City’s first team, making up to 32 league appearances by the time the Championship was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

When the league resumed, Bellingham continued to perform well for his team and be one of the highlights.

At the end of his debut season, Bellingham scored four goals in 44 games, and Birmingham City finished high enough to avoid relegation.

Thus, in his first season, Jude Bellingham was crowned as the best on the team and the main person responsible for Birmingham’s stay in the league.

He received the EFL Young Player of the Season and the English league’s best young player awards.

Jude Bellingham joins Borussia Dortmund

After his beautiful debut season, Jude Bellingham was one of the names that made the most waves in the transfer market.

Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund have been heavily linked to the player. However, the German club won the young man’s heart.

According to an interview given by Bellingham’s father, the choice was due to the fact that the club has a good reputation for giving opportunities to young people in its first team.

Bellingham soon flew to Germany for medical examinations, and his move to the Bundesliga club was announced.

According to Sky Sport, Jude Bellingham’s transfer fee to Borussia Dortmund had an initial fee of £25 million. This made the Englishman the most expensive 17-year-old player in football history.

The goal also made him the club’s youngest player to score in any competitive match.

On his league debut, against Borussia Mönchengladbach, he provided an assist that earned him the honor of September’s Bundesliga Young Player of the Month.

In October 2022, Bellingham, aged 17 years and 113 days, set a new record as the youngest player to start a Champions League game.

In his official presentation, Jude Bellingham received the number 5 shirt and thanked Jesús Vallejo, the then holder of the shirt, calling him “a brilliant, brilliant person”.
